The Middle Ages

Guided visit for grades 1 to 3

Trois lion aquamaniles/Drie aquamaniles in de vorm van een leeuw/Three aquamaniles in the shape of a lion

Imagine a time machine could fly you and your class back in time! Off to the Middle Ages—the era of knights and damsels! What did people eat back then, and did they already use knives and forks? Did everyone have a horse? And how did knights manage to climb onto their horses while wearing heavy armour? Were medieval people afraid of dragons (how would you feel if you saw one?!)? And what kinds of houses did they live in?

Students will be introduced to the medieval world through the museum’s fascinating exhibits. With the help of a guide, they will observe, imitate, and draw some of the museum’s most interesting pieces—all while listening to exciting stories!

Guided visit for grades 4 to 6

Tapisserie avec scènes provenant d’un « jeu de sauvages »/Wandtapijt met taferelen uit een “spel van wildemannen”/Tapestry with scenes from a “game of wild men”

The Middle Ages spanned roughly 1,000 years—was everything the same throughout? Not at all! From feudalism to the Crusades to the rise of cities, history was in constant motion. Tour different museum galleries: see early Merovingian villages, admire early medieval art such as ivory book covers and precious textiles, step into a Gothic interior, explore religious art, tapestries, and silver tableware. Discover what medieval people ate, wore, played with, and where they lived through close observation and hands-on activities.
