Inuit - guided visit for adults

This autumn, the Museum of Art & History opens a window onto the Far North, taking you across the tundra and ice fields where Inuit communities live.  

Join an experienced guide as you marvel at the deceptively simple forms of Inuit sculpture: dancing bears, frowning birds and other figures shaped with remarkable patience, skill and humour. 

The highlight of the exhibition is the graphic art of Kinngait Studios, a contemporary artists’ cooperative in Canada. Since the 1950s, predominantly female artists have been drawing, printing and stencilling scenes inspired by the Inuit world. Their work brings together memories of a nomadic way of life, birds and marine animals, traditional stories of Raven and the sea goddess Sedna, as well as everyday scenes from modern life, such as the interior of a home or children at play. 

During the visit, your guide will explore the choices behind the artworks. Which subjects are most popular, and why? What materials are available? How is the work shared among artists? And what is the economic impact of this successful art movement? 

Through the eyes of Inuit artists, you’ll discover a world that may seem very different from our own. It is a world made increasingly fragile by climate change, mass tourism and a painful colonial past, yet one that continues to draw strength from a remarkably resilient cultural tradition.
