International Study Day on the Mosan Metalwork Fragments from Pétermonostora

On the occasion of the temporary exhibition Pétermonostora – Mosan treasure from Hungarian soil, the Royal Museums of Art and History are organising an international study day bringing together researchers and specialists in Mosan metalwork, archaeology, and medieval history.

The RMAH are honoured to host, for six months, as part of this exhibition, the two large Mosan enamel plaques discovered during excavations at the monastic complex of Pétermonostora (Hungary), a private foundation that was destroyed during the Mongol raid accompanying the invasion of Hungary in 1241–1242.

Displayed to the public in the “Treasure Room”, alongside emblematic Mosan works, these enamel fragments regain their full significance. Complementing the exhibition, the study day will be devoted to this extraordinary discovery. It will provide an opportunity to clarify the place of these enamels within Mosan metalwork, to present a range of previously unpublished discoveries, and to share extensive material data gathered during laboratory examinations. This monographic approach to the Pétermonostora enamels will also enable researchers to reassess the question of the relationships between the Mosan region and Central Europe during the medieval period.

The study day will focus not only on the site of Pétermonostora, but also on the Abbey of Saint-Trond (Sint-Truiden, Belgian Limburg). Particular attention will be devoted to the latter institution, as industrial CT scans carried out by Aumovio Hungary Ltd have revealed inscriptions beneath the enamel surface that appear to indicate that the work may originally have been intended for the abbey.

The study day will bring together several international specialists, providing an opportunity to combine historical, archaeological, and scientific approaches to these exceptional works.
