Learn everything there is to know about Greek pottery: the different types, their uses, how they were made, and which decorations were fashionable. Did you know, for instance, that a krater is a giant vessel used during feasts to mix wine with water? And that this diluted wine was drunk from a shallow cup that required some dexterity? By the way, did you know that sometimes funny pictures were painted on the bottom of those cups—only visible once the drink was finished!? Moreover, pottery is expert work: the walls of the vessel can't be too thick or too thin, the kiln must reach the perfect temperature, and the drawing has to be clear. It's with this last element that students will experiment in order to understand how Greek craftsmen applied figures on red- or black-figure backgrounds. Negative and positive space, mirroring, geometry, and above all their own boundless creativity will turn your students into expert potters: pick a technique and apply it to a clay tile.
