Finding aids

Besides traditional inventories, the RMAH also strive to make their archival holdings better accessible through thematic search tools and archival guides. This is a work in progress, but the first results can be found here:

  • Colonial objects - From its inception, the museum collected various ethnographic collections, including objects from Congo. After the creation of the Congo Free State, many objects found their way to the museum through bequests, purchases, and donations. This collection policy left its traces in the acquisitions files, the correspondence of the directors, the curators, and other museum staff, as well as in the museum inventories (catalogues). Later, these collections were transferred to the Royal Museum for Central Africa. An overview of these archival sources can be found in this finding aid. (Download the pdf)
