With your chest facing one way and your nose the other, you won’t get very far—but to the Egyptians, it made perfect sense to depict people that way! Step into the shoes of an Egyptian artist and immerse yourself in a world of lines and colour codes. What makes Ancient Egyptian art so recognizable? Did nothing really change over the 3,000-year-long empire? What tools and materials did the Egyptians use to draw? Examine pens, ink, papyrus, and ostraca, and analyse official portraits and sketches so you too can become an expert on Egyptian art. Based on drawings and exercises in the exhibition galleries, the students will relocate to the studio to create a portrait on a clay tablet, following the rules of Ancient Egyptian art. Are you facing left or right? What are you wearing? Is your phone in the portrait? Are you standing or sitting? Making choices and experimenting turns your students into true “writers of outlines” (as Egyptian artists were called).
