Guided tour - Georgia: a story of encounters

On this tour, learn all about Georgia's long history and the influences that shaped it. You will see how Georgian culture is a story of encounters.

Located in the Caucasus with peaks of up to 5,000 metres, between the Black and Caspian seas, the region has been a conduit for the multitude of peoples crossing the country.

Follow the guide through 12 000 years of Georgian history, which is, for all its complexity, remarkably unified and coherent as witnessed in its viticulture, metalworking and later goldsmithing, even after the Christianisation of the region in de 4th century. Understand how Georgian culture incorporates certain elements from the Hellenistic, Persian and Byzantine worlds. Mighty neighbours, yet the artisans from the Georgian region manage to adapt and revisualize their art to make it into something entirely their own, unique and distinguishable.

The chronological trail is divided into seven chapters: from the Neolithic revolution, through the Roman occupation, the sweeping conversion to Christianity, invasions by the Arabs and later the Mongols, and finally the annexation by Russia.

Marvel at the delicate gold jewellery and bronze swords produced and traded by the metal workers of the South Caucasus during late prehistoric times. Imagine yourself in Ancient Greece and step on board the Argo with mythical hero Jason in search of the Golden Fleece. Then dwell on the delicately illuminated medieval gospels.

In short, a journey through millennia of history of this beautiful region – an encounter to remember.
