Prehistory

The Prehistory collection of our region is the largest of its kind in Belgium. It covers all periods, from the first human settlements – almost half a million years ago – to the Celts

Stone Ages

The flint artifacts shed light on the lifestyle of prehistoric hunters and gatherers, as well as the first farmers and herders. The famous flints from Spiennes transport you back to the 4th millennium BCE. This Neolithic mining site has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2000. The gallery explores in detail how the stone material was extracted.

Metal Ages

Bronze and iron proved excellent materials for making axes, vessels, and more. The transition from stone to metal tools also took place in our region around 2000 BCE. From the Celtic period, a magnificent gold ornament that once decorated a drinking horn is on display. It was discovered in a rich grave in Eigenbilzen, dating from around 400 BCE.
