Arts décoratifs du XVIIIe siècle
Since 12.10.24, the Decorative Arts Department of the Art & History Museum has been displaying a selection of 18th-century objects in three renovated galleries.
A Tale of Power and Beauty – Masterpieces from the 18th Century
In these three renovated galleries, a selection of 18th-century art objects focuses on several themes that underwent radical transformation in Europe during the Age of Enlightenment: nature, the state, religion, philosophy, science, and technology. The aim of this permanent exhibition is to go beyond the usual historical and stylistic approach to explore ways of thinking and living in the Low Countries under the Habsburgs of Austria and in the Principality of Liège.
Alongside recent acquisitions, the scenography sheds new light on some of the collection’s best-known masterpieces and highlights works that might not be as famous but whose artistic quality and variety pay tribute to the region’s artists in fields such as goldsmithing and silversmithing, sculpture, ceramics, glassmaking, lacemaking, and tapestry.
