About the activity

On the 23rd of September 2021, an international conference will be held as the final chapter of the Wiki Women Design project.

In October 2020 the Flanders Architecture Institute launched the project Wiki Women Design with the objective to record and unlock data and knowledge on Wikipedia about women’s contributions to the designed environment in Belgium, from (interior) architecture and graphic design to fashion and product design. By making knowledge on these women accessible online, the project aims to bring to light to these often forgotten or under-recognized figures.

For the past months, Wiki Women Design has done so by organizing Wikipedia edit-a-thons in collaboration with 27 project partners from heritage institutions, the academic world, the Wikipedia community and contemporary designers. During these writing sessions, all parties involved contribute to a more inclusive record of design heritage by women in a participatory way.

The symposium as keystone aims to bring together researchers in architecture and design, professionals in heritage institutions, international experts in the field and contemporary designers reflect upon the project’s preliminary results and the future steps that can be undertaken to improve gender representation in the field.
